    Ari Availability, Prices and Shipping
My store is offering a huge collection of ari embroidered items, including rugs, cushion covers, fabric, and wall hangings, and in both silk and wool thread. If buying different embroidered items on the same day, save money on postage by requesting a special invoice from me BEFORE you pay for them.
    Note:
    A
major earthquake in 2005 and an
ongoing territorial conflict that has escalated in 2019 have created a lot of chaos in beautiful Kashmir. That and the fact that the cost of artistic handmade goods is always going up has contributed to the higher costs of these amazing pillowcases and rugs. If you have ever wanted one in your home, acting sooner rather than later will save money.

Since seller-written Buying Guides have been discontinued by eBay, I have expanded mine, added new photos, and moved them to Amaz*n and Kindl*. You can find them by typing the phrase "

"Collecting Aari: The Amazing Crewel Embroidery of Kashmir, Indi
    a Buying Guide
    "
was written to help the buyers of Kashmir crewel embroidery understand the background of this fascinating collecting field, to learn about some of the most popular types, and find resources for purchase of both personal and household aari, with photos throughout.

    Household Textile Ari
Kasmiri Aree (or Ari) Embroidery is an ancient form of intricate threadwork from the Kashmir region of India and nearby areas. It is a type of two-handed chainstitch or crewelwork using a long hooked needle and wooden frame that covers every square inch of the cotton canvas base fabric. Open background areas are filled in with concentric rings of stitches that are so tight and even, they may appear machine-made to the unitiated.
The completed item is attached to a thick cotton canvas back.
It takes a long time and a lot of skill to create rugs, tapestries, pillow covers and other textiles for the home using this process. Men as well as women create ari textiles. Designs include ancient paisley forms, animals, trees, landscapes, flowers and geometrics. A few tell a story about a journey. The bright colorful designs are stitched onto thick unbleached cotton canvas and backed with more canvas after completion.
Two Types of Thread Used With Ari Household Textiles
There are two types of thread used, silk, and wool. Both wear well. The silk ari textiles are shinier and smoother to the touch and the wool ari is soft and warm. “Silks” typically cost about twice as much as “wools.” While both types are colorful, the colors in the silks appear luminous. The effect is stunning.
In the area of India known as Kashmir (also spelled Kasmir), embroidery is important and has been for many centuries. There are several types of traditional needle art but this buying guide is about aari, a type of crewel or chain stitch embroidery used for all kinds of items, perhaps most famously, for rugs. The crewel embroidered rugs of Kashmir, whether silk or wool, are highly prized the world over.
When Indian ari crewel embroidery is found on personal textiles like shawls, clothing, curtains, and bedspreads, it is also called Kashida. Unlike the other type of ari, it does not completely cover the base fabric. The background fabric becomes part of the design, too.

This series of booklets, Buying Guides for International Collectables, celebrates folk art and collectable items from around the world, including some that are not well-known but that are affordable and fascinating. Ceramics, wood carvings, semi-precious gemstones, embroidery, sculpture, and sterling silver figurines are just some of the areas explored. My Seller FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Allergy Note: All lots come from a smoke free and cat free home but pre-owned items may have originated in different conditions.
About Discounted Shipping: USA shipping only. I am happy to discount shipping within 48 hours of the first purchase if you request a discounted invoice after your last auction concludes but BEFORE payment is sent. Large fragile items are not usually subject to this option because they often have to ship in separate boxes.
I strive to ship items via the least expensive way possible to save you money, and I utilize eBay USPS shipping for just that reason, but tracking will always be included because it is an eBay requirement.
Shipping and Return Policy: I can only ship to your official eBay address and I do not ship on Friday and Saturday or during dangerous weather conditions. If you pay for an item any time from Thursday to Sunday, it will ship on Monday. If you pay for an item anytime between Monday and Wednesday, it will ship on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Please bear this in mind, as well as the post office transit time estimates, when looking at arrival dates.
In over 20 years, my return policy has not changed. All sales are final - no returns or refunds unless there is a question of authenticity or a gross error in the description. If any thing you buy from me is not as described and photographed, you are entitled to a full refund of your purchase price after the item is returned. I do not typically offer partial refunds.
Payment Reminder: If you are new around here, you need to know that eBay automatically opens a case when payment fails to arrive within the required period. After a case is opened, buyers have several more days to send payment before the buyer account receives a “strike.” I have received angry emails from slow paying buyers who have no idea the process is automatic, hence, this reminder.
ABOUT FEEDBACK: My top priorities are answering email, writing accurate descriptions and fast shipping. Feedback is important but not my priority. I leave feedback only once or twice a month in large groups to save time.
Please do not make an offer or request a lower price unless the "Best Offer" option is available for that particular item.
