Description
Up for sale is a completed Crewel ColorArt Embroidery Picture. The title is SUNLIGHT SOAP and it is a reproduction of an advertisement for this soap in the 1880s. It is a picture of a famous print that is done on polyester fabric and parts of the picture are then done with crewel embroidery. The areas embellished with crewel are parts of her clothes, pitcher basin, bowl, table and table legs. It is just charming and would look wonderful for an antique collectors decor. The matted size is 18 x 14. the fabric is stretched and stapled to plywood backing and has a nice chocolate brown mat and is ready to frame.Included in the listing is a picture of a kit:
“SUNLIGHT SOAP" Stitchery Kit #00569
Here is a vintage stitchery embroidery kit entitled “SUNLIGHT SOAP”. The adorable kit has a women washing clothes with Sunlight Soap, on the wall it says “THIS IS THE WAY WE WASH THE CLOTHES”. The kit is adapted from the painting by G. D. Leslie RA., Exhibited at the Royal Academy London 1887.
Kit contains: portions of the design printed in full color on 100% polyester fabric, Paternayan 100% wool crewel yarn, needle, instruction sheet and stitch chart. Frame size 14" x 18"; size without mat 11" x 15". Frame and mats not included. From Johnson Creative Arts, Inc.
I found this for sale on a web site with a cost of .00 unfinished and unstretched without a mat. here is the information they provided:
From the Manufacturers of Elsa Williams and Needle Treasures comes this fabulous FanciCrafts gallery crewel style Vintage Advertisement Reproduction for Sunlight Soap. In the North of England in the mid-1880s, a successful wholesale family grocery business run by William Lever starts producing a new type of household soap. The product contains copra or pine kernel oil, which help it lather more easily than traditional soaps made of animal fats. Unusually for the time, Lever (predecessor to the current LEVER2000 soap manufacturer)gives the soap a brand name "Sunlight" and sells it wrapped in distinctive packs. This rare design is a reproduction of a painting used in their 1887 ads~a perfect addition to antique collector's decor, nostalgic poster needleart and more. You'll add your needleartistry to that of the painter, resulting in a collaboration piece of art which you'll be proud to display for years to come.

What makes this so unique is that it was the initial hand crafted model from which a picture was taken to be used on the kit packaging.
After wards the picture was probably used as a model to a needpoint kit which would have been on display in a store to show the prospective buyers how the item will look when finished.
This has been tucked away all these years in the store or wharehouse
I learned recently that the name on many of these finished pieces identified the company as JCA (Johnson Creative Artis) Inc. with an address in Massachusettes. They evidently ceased operations and will not be making/distributing any more needlecraft kits. These finished piece from kits are already hard to find and will only be offered occasionally perhaps on the internet. Per the JCA website:
"Due to the death of our owner, Alan S. Getz, JCA, Inc. has ceased operations indefinitely.
We would like to thank our loyal customers who have supported JCA for over 50 years.
JCA manufactures premium needlecraft products and distributes fine knitting yarns. We are an amalgamation of three companies-Paternayan Brothers (started in 1939), Elsa Williams (started in 1960) and Reynolds Yarns (also started in 1960)."
